Text or Call? The better way to communicate with your date
by Sam James
So you just got his phone number or just came home from your first date. What’s the next step? To text or call?
I personally preferred a phone call until I discovered how much easier and convenient texting was. Not that I’m a newcomer when it comes to texting, but I realized that sending a text message helped to relieve some of the jitters that comes with calling someone. Texting allows me to revise and edit as many times as I need before sending that final draft. However, if I am very fond of someone, I would much rather hear his phone than read a few lines in my text inbox. Text messaging should only be used to supplement a phone call and not replace it. In my opinion, when a guy calls me it says that he’s more interested in me than if all of our conversations were done via text messages. Calling also shows that you’re brave and interested enough to face the possibility of rejection.
Here are the advantages of both calling and texting:
Advantages of Text Messaging:
1. Quick and easy way to communicate
2. Great when you want to send a short message (for example: “Are you free for lunch on Friday?”)
3. Best to use when nervous
4. Convenient (You can text from work, school, or on another date)
5. Flirt-friendly
6. Rejection-friendly
7. Revise and edit
8. Doesn’t require immediate response
9. Saves minutes on your phone
10. More privacy – no one else can hear your conversation
11. Doesn’t interrupt the other person
12. Hides one’s emotion (imagine being pissed off that your date canceled on you, but you don’t want to show it)
13. Keeps a record of your conversation
Advantages of calling:
1. Deeper level of interaction; more personal
2. Hear the other person’s voice and tone
3. Voice/tone can provide direct gauge of person’s emotions better than emoticons would
4. Requires immediate response
5. Clarity/less ambiguity when hearing one’s response instead of reading it
6. Say more in a shorter period of time
7. Best when having a serious conversation
8. More formal
9. Less dangerous to do when driving (although both texting and calling are NOT recommended while driving)
10. The person can’t quote you on what you said in a previous conversation since there is no proof (unless you tap your calls)
